full tank

What would you do if a mosquito landed on your elbow? Why, of course you would take an "empty" and "full" shot. :)

Just to let my 'readers' know (are you really readers? - this is a photo blog...), I will be taking a brief hiatus from my blog while I make changes to my laptop that were necessitated by cirsumstances at my job. You can visit my SmugMug account until then and see the photos that I take on a daily basis.
...on the side, congratulations to Mark on his new painting contract! :)

mrs. turtle

I was out for my typical walk along the Wisconsin River when I saw this goliath. At 15 to 17 inches long, she is larger than average. She was passive in nature, but I was very careful to keep distance and always be very alert. She hid when I first walked up to her; retracting her entire head into her shell; but the longer I sat there the more 'comfortable' she became with my presence. I walked away for 15 minutes, and when I got back she had moved almost 30 feet (hence the change in scenery for the last photo).
For more information about the Midland Smooth Softshell Turtle, try these links:
Herp.net about softshell turtles
Wisconsin DNR site for Midland Smooth Softshell Turtle
(Male turtles of this species are typically only 7 to 9 inches long while females are typically 14 inches long. This led to my assumption that the turtle was female.)

restarting

I use Aperture to organize my photos. I've loved it's fantastic organization (watch more here) and storage; but one morning at the end of last week, Aperture no longer wanted to recognize any photos. Coincidently, I was wanting to spend my entire week's free time recovering just under 26,000 photos from a database.
I've got my database back, and a useable backup plan as well has been implemented. Hopefully, there shall be no more week-and-a-half lapses of no posts.

about expressions

I enjoy photography; the beauty, the art, the expression, the memories. It helps me relax and reflect on what's important.

All of the images shown are unedited (except where noted) and are available upon request (joshualsmith at mac dot com for information).
